Case Study – TF1
TF1 gets Productivity Boost with ContentAgent
Automated API-driven workflow speeds legacy content into Avid editorial
Originally established more than 80 years ago, making it one of the world’s longest-serving broadcasters, TF1 is the most popular domestic television network in France. The station’s postproduction department has utilised ContentAgent to create a bespoke workflow, automating ingest between its substantial archive and its Avid editing facility running on ISIS shared storage.
This automated process is driven by a TF1 application that controls ContentAgent via a web service (API). This allows the operators to browse the archive and submit jobs to ContentAgent to create Avid compatible media files (and monitor progress on tasks being executed,) without leaving the TF1 user interface.
“ContentAgent has been rapidly integrated within our existing environment,” maintained a TF1 infrastructure spokesperson. “This allowed us to move programme files directly from our archive into postproduction. ContentAgent enabled our multi-format legacy content to become immediately available to our Avid Media Composers without the need to transcode. The productivity improvements were very noticeable.”
In TF1’s case, the automated workflow starts with its legacy content comprised of MXF and GXF assets containing MPEG2 video and Dolby E audio data. These are transcoded as necessary, including SD to HD up-conversion. PCM audio is derived from the decoded Dolby E assets and the resultant video and audio wrapped into XDCAM HD OP-Atom Avid MXF files with the associated XML and metadata ready for editing.
Julien Gachot, Managing Director of IVORY, ROOT6 Technology’s representative in France, concludes:
“The implementation by TF1 illustrates the postproduction bottlenecks that ContentAgent overcomes particularly well. We recently took the opportunity at SATIS Expo to introduce ContentAgent to the French-speaking audience which is increasingly facing the necessity for file-based workflows combined with less manpower to execute those tasks. ContentAgent is the ideal solution as a central hub to manage and automate such workflows from ingest to delivery.”
